Naya Rivera touched down in Toronto today to help launch the Sunshine Foundation’s latest initiative, the Spread a Little Sunshine campaign, celebrating the charity’s 25th anniversary.
The Foundation makes dreams come true for children who have severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses, ranging from trips to meeting celebrities and athletes. The Glee star explained how she jumped at the chance to work with the Sunshine Foundation, saying, “I think because we’re in the business that we’re in, we have this platform, and if you can raise awareness more than other people—I know once I tweet about this, you’ll have a lot of kids going to Disney World!” Rivera was joined by two of the foundation’s Sunshine Kids, Ty and Jazmine, twins with cerebral palsy.
We asked Naya about her own dreams and what’s next for her. “I want to do a movie… I’d like to be good in that movie! And obviously, music. I’m really excited about [releasing an album] but it’s really nerve-wracking at the same time. That’s been a dream of mine forever, ever since I was 3 I’ve been in singing lessons and talent competitions and to actually be in a recording studio is amazing.” And as for her role as Santana on Glee? “There’s a lot of changes! Its still the same Glee, and I think its cool when your character gets to evolve. Graduating high school was so fun, and it jogs you a bit creatively. I’m in the process of finding out who Santana is now and how this has changed her.”
The star also let us in on her off-duty style signatures—while Rivera was wearing a decidedly on-trend neon frock with sky-high pumps, she revealed that she prefers to go low-key, opting for slouchy tees, and while she admitted to falling back on a blue-jean habit, that she often reaches for coloured J. Brands.
Throughout August, shoppers can purchase decals at Winners and Homesense stores, with 100% of proceeds going to the Foundation. The social media-savvy set can also get involved by sharing the cause, or tweeting the hashtag #spreadsunshine.
